Arenal Volcano is surrounded by tropical gardens and forests rich in birdlife. It is an amazing place to simply sit back and watch the scenery.
However, if you want to be more active then there are lots of options in the area.
Baldi Thermae are closest to La Fortuna and the largest of the hot springs, with 30 hot and cold water pools and extensive gardens. Open 10:00-22:00, entrance fees start at US$28 for an adult half-day entrance.
The much more commercial Tabacon Resort can be found on the road between La Fortuna and the lake.
Entrance fee prices start from $55 per person for an evening pass (6pm – 10pm). Buffet dinner can also be included, from $70 pp. Spa treatments also available.
Another option is the Ecotermales hot springs, which only accepts 100 visitors at a time, offering a much more tranquil setting than Tabacon. Open 10:00-21:00, entrance fees start at US$29 for an adult half-day pass.
Follow signs for Arenal Observatory Lodge. From the entrance you can follow a network of trails from 30 minutes to several hours.
A network of trails through the forest connected by suspended walkways through the forest canopy. Recommended for the stunning views out across the treetops to the valley below. On a clear day you can expect a fantastic view of the volcano
The trail can be easily self-guided, although you can choose to go with a guide should you wish. The Hanging Bridges are located close to Arenal Lake, a bit further on from the Lost Iguana Hotel.
4km east of Arenal town. A lovely place to stop and explore on your way round the lake to Monteverde.
Other things to do
Wildlife viewing at Caño Negro wetland refuge.
Near the volcano is Lake Arenal, a large reservoir formed in the 1970s to provide hydroelectric power. There is good kayaking, fishing and watersports, particularly windsurfing near Tilarán.
Also try caving in Venado Caves, the Arenal Sky Tram, mountain biking, hiking and horse riding.
Your hotel will be able to help arrange any guided/ organised activities.
