Evolution Galapagos cruise holiday, Galapagos Cruises Evolution information

Practical information about a Galapagos cruise holiday on board Evolution.
Further information

Evolution boat specifications
Length on deck: 60m/192ft
Boat width (beam): 9m/29ft
Average speed: 10-12 knots
Crew: 18 plus 2 guides, 1 cruise director & 1 doctor

Evolution accommodation information
All cabins are a fair size. All are outside with lower beds, some twin, some double. All have wardrobes.

Cabins are graded and priced A/C/D according to deck.
The top deck (A) is where you will find the three junior suites, two doubles and one twin bedded room.

Middle deck © is where most of the cabins are (nine in total) with the remaining four on the lower deck (D).

Size of cabins does not really vary between decks C and D but you would expect slightly more noise on the latter.

Equipment on board
Sea kayaks: glass bottomed for use only at certain snorkel sites.

Snorkel equipment: included in the cruise rate, as is use of wetsuit.

Pura’s opinion
Evolution is a beautiful small ship very much evocative of 1920s style ocean liners – just much smaller.

Very comfortable indeed, lots of crew and even a doctor on board.

All meals are buffet with a uniformly high standard of service and food.

This is a luxury experience but on a really quite intimate scale with just 32 passengers.

Not great for anyone who is travelling alone they do not generally offer a ‘willing to share’ option and the single supplement is 75% on top of the normal cabin price.

But then again, it’s not really a budget option.

Star rating
This is a deluxe class motor cruiser.

The communal areas are large and very comfortable with plenty of different seating areas including two observation decks as well as a very large sun deck up top. Interior spaces are substantial.

Noise
You should be aware that on any boat you will have some noise from generators and from the engine when travelling. Given the substantial construction and size of Evolution this is not generally at all intrusive.

Stability
Being a larger ship she is really quite stable in the water. In addition, the boat follows a route which is relatively protected from the prevailing winds (coming from the south west).
However, there is bound to be some movement and this will be most noticeable between July and October in the more exposed waters around Genovesa and the southern tip of Isabela.

Responsible travel
The owners of Evolution are the second oldest boat operators in the islands so have 23 years experience working with the islands and are well integrated into efforts to maintain and preserve them.
They have three boats, of which Evolution is the largest, making them the main operator of deluxe class small boats to the Galapagos.
Evolution’s engines have been fitted with special oil filters which mean that oil is only changed when in dry dock on the mainland. This is not the case for most boats and the cause of some environmental damage.
Waste on board is taken either to the recycling plant on Santa Cruz or back to the mainland to minimize the effects of the ship’s presence.
The ship’s owners are permanent supporter and member of the Charles Darwin Foundation.
On the islands they support the local scout movement with monthly allowances.
In the wider world they donate trips for auction to support causes such as the genocide prevention network.
