Find out what we at Pura really think about a Patagonia cruise on board one of the two Australis cruise ships – Stella Australis and Via Australis.

Patagonia Cruise Australis Ushuaia » More

Further information

Why Australis?
There are lots of good reasons to choose Australis over another boat to visit the areas of Ushuaia and Cap Horn.

On board M/V Stella or M/V Via, passengers will have a unique experience exploring glaciers and fjords.

This five day cruise experience usually offers two shore excursions per day.
And it includes:

A navigation through the legendary Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel.
A sailing through the glaciers and fjords of the Darwin Mountain Range.
An excursion through areas declared by the United Nations as the most virgin ones in the world.
An expedition to the place known by the sailors as ‘the end of the world’, Cap Horn.

During this five day cruise trip enjoy stunning views and discover a unique flora: native forests, exotic flowers, amazing glaciers, etc.

Appreciate the wonderful and typical Fauna as you will come across colonies of sea lions, elephant seals, cormorans and southern dolphins.
Moreover, have the opportunity to see one of the largest (150,000) penguin colonies in the Southern Hemisphere.

How active?
On board the boats you can choose to take part in excursions or not, depending on your mood. Assuming that you join in all possible landings, the cruise is really quite active with regular walks and hikes in spectacular scenery. This is an active cruise.

Note that shore landings are always subject to weather conditions.

How comfortable?
The M/V Stella built in 2010 is the last Australis ship made, it offers 100 cabins for 210 passengers.

The M/V Via as been built in 2005, it offers 64 cabins for 136 passengers.

Both offer lots of space and the last technologies.

All cabins are outside and have air-conditioning and private bath with shower. They have twin or double beds, and some have a foldaway upper berth.

Each ship has two lounges, a library with books of the region’s history and cultures.

There are six and four zodiac landing craft for shore excursions.

Smoking is only allowed on open decks.

There is an open bridge policy.

How independent?
Each ship has a six-member expedition team for shore expeditions into remote wilderness areas and daily lectures on the flora, fauna, natural and cultural history of the region. You will also find a physician on board.

When should I go?
The best time of year to visit Patagonia is October to April.

You are likely to experience cold evenings and mornings but mild daytime temperatures.

Please note though that the weather in southern Patagonia is very changeable and unpredictable, you should be prepared for four seasons in one day. Having said this, you are actually not at an extreme latitude – Cape Horn is on a roughly the equivalent latitude to Edinburgh.
