Last week restoration began on Rio de Janeiro’s most emblematic structure: the statue of Christ the Redeemer.
Work is predicted to end at the end of June 2010 but as the work depends on weather conditions it is not possible to guarantee dates.

Until the work finishes, there will be periods when the statue will be completely covered with scaffold. They will have a see-through protective screen allowing visitors to enjoy part of the statue.
The observatory will remain open for visitors to admire the scenery.
The repairs being done include the replacement of the mosaic covering the statue, cleaning of the stone to remove stains and fungus. Inside the concrete and steel structure will be strengthened.
The Statue of Christ the Redeemer is administered by Arquediocese of Rio de Janeiro and in the same way that during the construction of the Statue was made a campaign for collecting money from the people, now there will be a campaign called “Eu Sou de Cristo” (I am from Christ) in which each person who donates R$7,00 (only about £2) will receive a miniature of the Statue with certificate of authenticity.
