Permits to allow you to walk to Machu Picchu in 2009 are due to go on sale on the 19th December this year.
The ONLY way to arrive at Machu Picchu on foot through the top of the site is on the Classic Inca Trail, for which a permit is required.
Permits are issued to named individuals with their passport numbers so there is no means of buying them speculatively.
In 2008 the permits went on sale in January, by the end of the month permits were sold out for almost all of April, May and June. Through the rest of the year permits were generally selling out around five months ahead of time.
