A campaign has launched to pushing for the 2nd January 2009 to be delcared an official holiday in Chile.
So 87 is a random number but I really do love Chile and Chileans generally. Let’s face it, the 2nd January is a Friday – how much is really going to be achieved that day?
The campaign is called ‘tómate el sandwich, Michelle’ so is a direct appeal to the president, Michelle Bachelet. Since this all appears to have started in a creative agency somewhere in Santiago, the name is clever…
A día sandwich is the colloquial name given to work days caught between public holidays and a weekend. There are places in the world where Thursdays and Tuesdays are holidays – leaving the Fridays and Mondays vulnerable to people taking a ‘sandwich day’.
The tomate part…either means ‘take’ or ‘have’ (when given an accent) or ‘tomato’.
The campaign website www.tomateelsandwichmicelle.cl sadly doesn’t allow votes from outside the country – I’ve tried and failed. But there is a song and video which is surprisingly catchy, the refrain is essentially “Take the sandwich Michelle…”
The status of the voting is, incredibly, rather close. 6854 for the holiday, 6716 against. Only in Chile!
Watch this space to see if the campaign is successful. If so, we’ll maybe start one up to declare Monday 31st December 2013 a dia sandwich.
