Activity and Comfort grading for our holidays

Our definitions

To help you find the perfect active holiday, we have graded all of our holidays for both Activity level and Comfort level.

Our grades are intended to give you an accurate view of the general level of activity and comfort on each holiday. There are inevitable variations from place to place and day to day, so they should be taken as a reflection of the holiday as a whole, rather than a minimum or maximum standard for every day. Full details are available in our full itineraries or by calling us.

Activity grades

Easy Easy activity grade
These holidays really only require mobility and a love of the outdoors. There are usually plenty of opportunities to get more active, but it’s not required.

Moderate Moderate activity grade
These holidays have an active element and do require a basic level of fitness. If you are comfortable with long walk, bike-rides, etc then these holidays should be good for you. For example, some UK hill walking would be ideal preparation for a Moderate grade walking holiday.

Adventure Adventure activity grade
The activity level on one of these holidays is probably not more strenuous than a Moderate holiday, but it’s likely to be more sustained.

To get the most from this grade of holiday, we’d advise that you have good health and fitness to a level where you’re comfortable with moderate exercise (eg hill walking/hiking) over the course of several days.

Technical Skills
Beyond core fitness, we generally don’t assume or require technical skills. Thanks to our expert guides and instructors, a willingness to learn and have a go is all that’s needed.

Our Horse Riding holidays are a little different in that clients need to have a certain level of proficiency and confidence in riding.

Comfort grades

Standard Standard comfort grade
Indicates a good standard of comfort in the hotels, inns and refugios, etc. that you’ll use. We choose smaller, comfortable, characterful hotels and inns with a good level of personal service where possible. You should note, however, that Standard comfort holidays do tend to have a significant proportion of nights spent in refugios or ‘under canvas’.

First Class First Class comfort grade
Indicates the use of superior (‘first class’) hotels etc. We choose smaller, very comfortable, characterful hotels and inns with a good level of personal service and generally more space and facilities than Standard.

Premium Premium comfort grade
Indicates the use of the best hotels, lodges, etc. that we know. These will still be smaller and offer a touch of luxury without sacrificing local character.

Note: Wilderness/Remote Areas
In wilderness areas you may stay in refugios or basic lodges or even porter-assisted camping (eg on the Inca Trail hike) depending on what’s available. We do our best to find comfortable solutions for clients but there are some places that you simply cannot experience without some compromise.

For full details of activities and accommodation specific to each itinerary, please refer to the ‘Holiday information’ section of the full detailed holiday itinerary or call us to discuss.
