Christmas Carols from Spain and Latin America

Christmas in Spain is a time of decorations, nativity scenes, street lighting, joy and a generally festive atmosphere. One of the most popular traditions during the Christmas season are ‘Villancicos de Navidad’ or Christmas Carols, sung at parties with families and close friends.

*Do take note that in Spain and most of Latin America, presents are traditionally exchanged by Christians during Three Kings’ Day (Epiphany) on January 6th rather than December 25th.

Originating from the middle Ages, ‘Villancicos’ (coming from the word villa, meaning city) gained importance during the Renaissance and Baroque period, times when religion was particularly significant.

Today in Spain, you’ll hear some of the same Christmas carols you already know in English as they have the exact same melody, but the lyrics won’t be the same ‘ whilst the stories are similar most of the time, the lyrics aren’t literal translations.

Please, have a look below at our selection of popular Villancicos from Spain and Latin America for you this Christmas, but for now here are the lyrics of ‘Campana Sobre Campana‘ (play the video at the top):

Campana sobre campana,
y sobre campana una,
asómate a la ventana,
verás al Niño en la cuna.
Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nuevas me traés?
Recogido tu rebaño
¿a dónde vas pastorcito?
Voy a llevar al portal
requesón, manteca y vino.
Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nuevas me traés?
Campana sobre campana,
y sobre campana dos,
asómate a la ventana,
porque está naciendo Dios.
Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nuevas me traés?
Caminando a media noche
¿dónde caminas pastor?
Le llevo al niño que nace
Como a Dios mi Corazón
Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nuevas me traés?
Campana sobre campana,
y sobre campana una,
asómate a la ventana,
verás al Niño en la cuna.
Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nuevas me traés?
Recogido tu rebaño
¿a dónde vas pastorcito?
Voy a llevar al portal
requesón, manteca y vino.
Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nuevas me traés?
Bell after bell,
and after that bell,another.
Peek out of the window,
you’ll see the child in his cradle
Bethlehem, bells of Bethlehem,
the angels play music,
What news do you bring me?
Picked up your herd
Where are you going shepherd?
I’ll bring to the stable
cheese, butter and wine.
Bethlehem, bells of Bethlehem,
the angels play music,
What news do you bring me?
Bell after bell,
and after that bell, are two.
Peek out of the window,
because God is born.
Bethlehem, bells of Bethlehem,
the angels play music,
What news do you bring me?
Walking at midnight,
Where are you going shepherd?
I’ll bring the child born,
As God to my heart.
Bethlehem, bells of Bethlehem,
the angels play music,
What news do you bring me?
Bell after bell,
and after that bell, another.
Peek out of the window,
you’ll see the child in his cradle.
Bethlehem, bells of Bethlehem,
The angels play music,
What news do you bring us?
Picked up your herd,
Where are you going shepherd?
I’ll bring to the stable
cheese, butter and wine.
Bethlehem, bells of Bethlehem,
the angels play music,
What news do you bring me?
