Where to go in October

Find out our pick of the best sights in October.

SPAIN: Autumn colours & flavours

In the north, the landscapes of the Pyrenees and the Picos are full of autumn colours, a glorious backdrop for your mountain adventures. The harvest season continues in La Rioja and the colour of the vineyards is stunning throughout the month. This is the peak season for walking down in Andalucía, with sunny warm days which aren’t too hot. The fact that it’s mushroom season around Aracena in the west means that you’ll get to enjoy some incredible dishes at the end of a day’s walking.

CHILE: vineyards & volcanoes
October is a great time of year in the Chilean Lake District and the winelands around Santiago. Temperatures are pleasant, the best known highlights of the Lakes such as Pucón are not too busy, and there is still snow capping the volcanoes so it all looks magnificent. Further south in Torres del Paine, the lodges are all open for the season but the winds haven’t yet hit so it’s a great time to head to southern Patagonia.

ECUADOR: Amazon & volcanoes

There are few better months to explore the mainland of Ecuador. The highlands of Quito and Cotopaxi are warming up after winter and it’s pretty dry. Down in the Amazon this is about the driest month which tends to mean that you get the best wildlife. The cloudforest is fantastic when it’s slightly drier though you’re still likely to get a bit wet. The south of the country from Cotopaxi through to Cuenca will be lovely in its spring greenery.
