Where to go in September

Find out our pick of the best sights in September.

PERU: trekking & fine food

September is arguably the best month if you’re heading up into the Andes, especially if hiking, as the crowds from the northern hemisphere’s summer holiday season have gone. However, you’re still a good way outside the rainy season, so can expect clear skies for photography, while the nighttime temperatures are slowly warming up – not so many camping nights at zero degrees! After your hard work hiking high mountains, stop off in Lima to take in Mistura, the annual gastronomic fest that celebrates the incredible diversity of Peruvian ingredients and cuisines.

SPAIN: walking & wine

A beautiful month in the north – September is typically the driest in the Picos de Europa. By the end of the month there will be lots going on in La Rioja as the wine harvest begins. In Andalucía, it is still nice and warm in Aracena and becoming bearable for walking. On the coast, the weather is lovely for the beach and it is getting quieter again. September is also a great time to see dolphins and migrating birds around Gibraltar and Cadiz.

ARGENTINA: wildlife & waterfalls

September’s a wonderful month to enjoy the wildlife of the Valdés Peninsula, as the southern right whales are present in force, and the Magellan penguins are starting to arrive. Even more dramatically, September is really the first month that sees the huge elephant seal bulls fighting for dominance. For a lovely contrast with the peninsula, September is also excellent at Iguassu Falls: moderate temperatures, fewer crowds, and a decent volume of water with full access to the surrounding trails.
