Sample itinerary

Travel from airport to Murillo de Gállego

Arrival in Spain - at either Barcelona or Zaragoza airport - today. On the way to your hotel in the village of Murillo de Gállego, your guide will meet you at the Castle of Loarre and show you around. This spectacular 1,000 year old castle might be familiar to your family, having played a starring role in movies like Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven. Your guide will give you your meet and greet welcome either here or at your hotel.

Hiking around the Mallos

Today, explore the spectacular Mallos; the red towers that dominate the landscape. Take a beautiful walk around them known as Heaven's Path. You are likely to see the vultures flying all around, as well as climbers making their way up the vertical walls.

Spend the day rafting and canoe-rafting

Murillo de Gállego is one of the best spots in Spain for water sports thanks to the Gállego river that descends from the nearby summits of the Pyrenees. Choose from rafting all together as a family or take your own canoe rafts to paddle on your own.

Hike in the Ordesa Valley

Travel east today towards the high peaks of the Ordesa National Park. Hike in its most emblematic valley, following the Arazas River to the Horse Tail Waterfall, perfect for a refreshing drenching after your hike.

Choose from canyoning or canoeing

Today, you will be taken to explore the deep canyons of the area, a natural waterpark that you can enjoy with safety thanks to our expert certified local guides. If you prefer quieter activities you can also choose to paddle in the calmer waters of the reservoir just by your hotel. In the afternoon explore the beautiful medieval town of Ainsa.

A day with the Bearded Vultures

Today you have a specialist wildlife guide with you all day. The world's highest concentration of Bearded Vultures can be found in the foothills of the Ordesa National Park, and Pura Aventura has close links with the Bearded Vulture Foundation, an NGO dedicated to protecting these spectacular birds. We can arrange for you to observe this endangered species from a hide, as they are being fed, and you will also be taken hiking to see them flying around you.

A day of mountain biking in Aínsa

You shouldn't leave Aínsa without exploring the area by mountain bike. In the last years it has become one of the top areas worldwide with routes for all levels. With the help of the modern electric mountain bikes and our expert guides you can find the route that fits your family best. This half day activity could be guided or self-guided with GPS and maps. Ask your cycling guide, Martín, about the best hidden pools along the Ara River, perfect for rinsing off the dust of a day’s mountain biking through the forests and hills.

Level of activity

As a tailor made trip, the level of exertion on this trip can be set by you to best suit your family. The sample itinerary described above assumes that you will be walking and mountain biking around the area of the Ordesa National Park and walking, rafting and canyoning in the area around the Aigues Tortes National Park. Depending on times of year, more intense water based activities may have minimum age limits of 12 or 14.

In general, we feel that we can tailor a great active family trip for children aged 10 or up - younger than that and it can get limiting.

To balance the exertions of such active days, we have chosen two lovely small hotels for you to stay in during the week. One is in a small village, the other more in the countryside alongside a beautiful lake. Both have their own restaurants.

Temperatures on this trip should be moderate, in the around the low 20°s during the day on average, cooler at night up in the mountains of course. May and June are beautifully green, the weather very good in the main and the water levels in the rivers at their best. July and August are busier and warmer but not unbearably hot at all - water levels in the rivers near Ainsa are getting low by this point in the year so water sports will likely all be around Sort from this point forwards. October can be a beautiful and peaceful time in the mountains with good stable weather being the norm.

Level of culture

This is primarily an adventure holiday in the big mountains of Spain so culture isn't a major feature. Saying this, the hotels are small and locally owned, with friendly hosts eager to share information about their locality.

There is a very good visitor centre in Ainsa dedicated to the conservation of the bearded vulture, a fascinating and key part of the food chain in Spain's mountains. The guide you have for a day is connected to this project so helps you to understand the conservation and environmental challenges of the area as well as showing you the wonderful landscapes.

In addition to this, we provide you with all the maps, walking notes and local information you will need to make the most out of your trip, for instance with recommended places to eat or walks to follow.

There is a detailed itinerary for this trip. Please get in touch and we can email that to you.

However, as a tailor made trip, in order to send the most appropriate proposal to you, we really need to discuss things with you first to find out how many of you there are, your ages, interests, when you want to travel, etc.

The holiday price includes accommodation in two rooms, mid-sized rental car, breakfasts and guided excursions, activities and entrances as per the detailed itinerary. Naturally, on each and every one of our holidays, we include Pura’s expertise, local contacts, support and advice throughout, along with the reassurance of our financial protection and safety auditing.

Flights are quoted separately for this holiday. Best flight routings are into Barcelona (airport code: BCN) and out of Zaragoza (airport code: ZAZ).

Departs any day of the year to suit you, from May through October.
